马特森曾坦言，自己接到补招电话时正在希腊与女友度假：“当时我在希腊度假，突然我接到征召入队的电话，我不得不尽快收拾行李，然后从希腊飞到德国的基地这里，我接到电话的时候，人正在船上。”
